It’s a bird, you will say. But for me, it’s more than just any bird. It’s the result of a challenge. A challenge I gave myself. One to break my limits.
The initial challenge consisted in using a very limited color palette, in a way to force me to play with values and place my colors cleverly to make the bird pop against the background. I’m very satisfied! But I decided to not stop there…
To push it even further, I decided to leave myself way more loose than usual… I didn’t have everything planned, like I do with my other characters. The feathers on the head was a on-the-moment choice, as well as the fantastical branches in the background. Same for the touch of silver on the wings and the placement of the partial black outlines. To finish off, I made the beak yellow, a color not found anywhere else in the painting – it’s a bold choice, and I love it.
I’ll start documenting more of my creative process and choices, of what went into my artworks. Both as a way to track my progress and give you insights. Do you enjoy this kind of behind the scenes? Is there something else you would like more of? Let me know what you think!
